Recently we were driving between Ojo Caliente and El Rito
in northern New Mexico, when we stopped to photograph
this descanso which had been placed here to memorialize some one
who had apparently died in an auto accident at this spot.
Descansos are very common in New Mexico,
but this one is particularly elaborate
and one of the only ones I have seen that are made of stone.
I have seen it many times before, ever since the 70's.
The white and rose colored quartz is very common in this area.
Unfortunately the plaque in the middle of the cross is long gone.
Sitting on the arm of the cross is a guardian angel.
