Adobe Hornos Built By The Northern New Mexico College Adobe Program

We were on the El Rito campus of the Northern New Mexico College back in the spring 

and I got some photos of the hornos that had been built 

by the Adobe Construction Program there.

Having gotten much interest in the recent post-

Wood Fired Ovens In Baja California Sur,

I thought these ovens would be a nice contrast.

The above photo shows two contrasting styles- 

the traditional one on the right that is found all over northern New Mexico

 and on the left the smaller, lower type that requires less wood to heat up.

Above is the horno at Ricardo's Rice and Beans Hotel, Restaurant, and RV Park

in San Ignacio.

Henrietta Furnace In Shenandoah County, Virginia

Just down the road from Jerome, Virginia 

lies the Henrietta Furnace for making iron.

These furnaces dot the western edge of the Shenandoah Valley

 and have long intrigued me for their imposing stonework.

As I continue reworking some of my very first posts 

and since the last post was on brick kilns, 

let's take a look at ceramic kilns, first in the Alamos, Sonora area.

While we were in Alamos, Sonora a couple of years ago

 our friend David found this brick making operation

 near the campground where we were staying.

Being familiar with making adobe bricks,

 I had always wanted to see how bricks were taken to the next step of firing them,

and the guys working here were more than happy to show us the ropes.

One of our favorite places to get a wood fired Italian style pizza 

and a craft beer is Il Vicino in Santa Fe, New Mexico...

Two Hornos In Alamos

Some friends in Alamos, Sonora told me the other day
 about the Panaderia Moderna

and the wood fired horno that they used for their bread.

I had to go check it out.

     We are currently in Alamos, Sonora, Mexico where there is much of interest for builders. A friend of ours at our campground was interested in wood fired kilns for ceramics and ran across some guys firing a brick kiln nearby. Having worked with adobe as much as I have in New Mexico I  was always interested in the "next step" of firing the bricks. Here is what we found:
