A couple of years ago as we traveled through the Mexican state of Michoacan

 we were advised by fellow travelers to visit the Paricutin Volcano. 

I am glad we did.

The Mission Church Of San Ignacio De Loyola In Baja California Sur

One of the more interesting towns in Baja California Sur

 is the date palm oasis of San Ignacio,

which lies near the center of Baja both north-south and east-west.

Because it is on neither the Pacific or the Sea of Cortez,

 it has missed some of the tourist development that has centered along the coasts.

The springs that provide the water in this small valley 

have created a lush environment in the midst of a harsh desert,

and an obvious place to locate a mission.

Stone Work In Guanajuato, Guanajuato

From time to time I like to acknowledge some of the beautiful stone work 

we have run across in our travels.

 The photos for this post came when we were in Guanajuato, Guanajuato 

 and took a walk from our campground.

 Guanajuato is a state full of silver mines and stone quarries

 and the city displays much of that.

Carved Stone In Mexico

I love working with stone and I love carved stone,

but I have never been a stone carver;

 but in our travels around Mexico in the last couple of years we

 have run across some beautiful work that I would like to share.

A Mexican Style Mortared Stone Work

An interesting style in stone work we have seen traveling around Mexico

 is inserting small stones in the mortar joints.

Stone And Concrete Walls Made With Forms

 Ever sense I first read about using a form to build a stone wall in the early 70's

 in the book Living the Good Life by Helen and Scott Nearing

 I thought it could be a good idea in the right situations.

 While we were in Alamos, Sonora recently there was a fellow 

who was doing just that with a  retaining wall 

and much of it would be covered up so looks were not a priority. 

Two Mortared Stone Walls

When we were in Truth Or Consequences, New Mexico 

we noticed this nice stone wall going up in the hot springs district.

Templo De La Purisima Concepcion

During the recent music festival many of the concerts were held in,

 and around, the Templo de la Purisima Concepcion

 and I would look at it amazement at what an incredible building it is.

Stone Ruins At San Juan de Rayas Mine

I am continually intrigued by ruins, there is so much to learn.

What worked, what failed.

And it bares the bones of buildings where we can see the details.

More Stone Carving In Mexico

On our way back from Mexico we stopped at this stone yard, 

Canteras Guadalajara, in Imuris, Sonora 

just about 40 miles south of Nogalos, Arizona.

Snake Motifs in Design

We walked by this rattlesnake wall in San Carlos, Sonora

 many times this past winter.

A Stone Sidewalk

When we were in Patzcuaro, Michoacan a couple of years ago

 they were replacing some sidewalks in the downtown area

 with what I believe was a basalt stone.

Constructing A Mortared Stone Wall

When we were in San Carlos, Sonora this past winter

 we would often go by where this fine gentleman

 was working on this nice stone wall.
